Since 2000, CCYA has been fortunate to partner with the Volunteer Master Gardeners of Cobb County.
Today, in the 1.5-acre gardens on the CCYA campus there is Veggie Patch, Berry Patch, Melon Hill, Herb Garden, Pollinator Garden, a High Tunnel (Hoop House for year-round growing), Flower Garden, and Chicken Coop ("The Egg Plant") that spans the back side of the CCYA campus.
The gardens and "The Egg Plant" are managed by a CCYA Farmer and a team of dedicated Cobb County Master Gardener Volunteers that together grow over 1,750 pounds of fresh organic produce that are farmed to table through the CCYA Cafeteria, providing several meals each day for youth residents.
Produce is grown year- round and includes collards, kale, lettuce, cabbage, peas, green beans, okra, cucumbers, onions, radishes, carrots, corn, squashes, peppers, tomatoes, garlic, potatoes, sweet potatoes, herbs, watermelon, blackberries, blueberries, raspberries and figs. Additionally, the chickens produce over 1,200 eggs each year.
During harvests, the garden employs several CCYA residents through Garden Youth Apprenticeships. Some Apprentices also work in the CCYA Cafeteria with the Chefs.
At CCYA our garden and meals are BLOOMING WITH POSSIBILITIES!
